The Black
Eyed Peas have revamped their 2003 track Where Is the Love? with
an all-star cast and a
powerful message on the refugee crisis and the Black
Lives Matter movement.
Fergie, Will.I.Am.,
Taboo and apl.de.ap said the new track was in response to terrorism and
violence.

The updated
version was released unannounced on Facebook on
Thursday and had already been shared 1.6 million times and viewed nearly 40
million times on the platform.
The
American pop group has re-recorded their 2003 hit Where is the Love? as
a social commentary on events in the US and abroad.
With vocals
from Justin Timberlake, Usher, The Game, Jessie J, Jaden Smith, Jamie
Foxx, Nicole Scherzinger and P. Diddy, the track about race divisions and
hatred is no less relevant that what is was 13 years ago.
An all-star
cast of celebrities also lend their names to the cause such as Kendall Jenner,
Rosario Dawson, Olivia Munn and DJ Khaled, while the families of
Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, both victims of police shootings,
are front and centre.
Former
Dallas Police Department chief David O. Brown also appears on the
politically-charged clip alongside individuals in different religious dress.
The updated
version is a powerful statement on the refugee crisis as much as it is on race
and the Black Lives Matter cause, with images of Syria flashing on the screen
alongside protests in the United States.
The Black
Eyed Peas have not released an album since 2010 but decided the world
"needed" the song when re-recording the track.
"We
started remaking Where Is the Love? this year right after being
bombarded by all the things the media were showing—the wickedness of the world,
the conflict in Syria, the Paris terrorist attack, the Brussels bombing, the
Turkey violence and the Orlando shooting," lead singer Will.I.Am told Genius.
"Every
time I looked up there was severe hate and not enough love, so I wanted to get
all of my friends together and re-imagine what we did after 9/11 with Where
Is the Love?"
All
proceeds from the single will go to the singer's I.Am.Angel foundation which
provides scholarships and educational programs to low-income neighbourhoods.
Darker and
more emotional than the original version, the new track also includes
verses about the US election and police shootings.
Rapper
The Game asks "Where is the love when a child gets murdered or a cop
gets shot down?". Rapper A$AP Rocky calls the American election a joke.
"My
mumma ask me why I never vote/ because the police man wants me dead
and gone/ that election looking likes a joke," he ruminates with Will
Smith's son, Jaden Smith.
The song is
being praised by fans online, who say the song is even more powerful and relevant
now.
