Gathering of Ndigbo at theWIC in the US |
The annual World Igbo Congress (WIC) ended in New York, United States of America Sunday, September 4, 2016. In its 22nd edition, the four day event which had as its theme; “ Kanyi Mezie Alaigbo” witnessed the gathering of notable Igbo sons and daughters from Nigeria and the Diaspora to discuss the way forward for the Igbo nation.
According to Chairman of World Igbo Congress,Nze Joe Eto, the convention is about protecting the Igbo homestead and preserving its heritage. “It is about providing world class healthcare for our people. It is about getting “Igbo leaders” to work for the Igbo”, he said.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Igbo Affairs and Director General of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Centre,Owerri, Dr. Samfo Nwankwo led the Imo State delegation to the convention. Speaking before leaving for the event, Dr. Nwankwo said that he would not only be representing Governor Rochas Okorocha, he would also intimate the gathering on the commendable efforts made by the administration to bring peace among the feuding factions of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo. In addition, brief the convention on the June, 2016 gathering of prominent Igbos in Owerri, the Imo State capital to map the way forward for the race and the establishment of a new Igbo language newspaper, ‘The Ikoroigbo’.
