A city preacher in Kenya has condemned women who deny their
men sex for not registering as voters for the 2017 General Election.
This was after Nyeri Town East legislator, Esther Murugi,
recently asked women to deny their husbands sex until they register as voters.
The MP hit the headlines a few years back when she vowed to
strip to protest the arraignment of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy
William Ruto at the International Criminal Court at The Hague.
But Murugi’s position is shared in other parts of the
country like Nyanza, where there have been concerted efforts to register more
people as voters ahead of the 2017 elections.
Leaders in Nyanza have reportedly been rallying residents to
register as voters in large numbers or risk being banned from attending
funerals and weddings. Boda boda operators have also reportedly been asked to
only give rides to people with valid voters’ cards.
Now, a preacher in Nairobi, Godfrey Migiwi, of the House of
Hope Church, has condemned the calls for women to withhold sex, arguing that
denying men sex was akin to mocking God.
He says that sex is a fundamental right for married couples
that is enshrined in Christianity as directed by the Bible.
“It is clear in the Bible that married couples should not
deny each other sex as it is a form of worship. It is sad that leaders are
trying to mislead those who are not aware of this verse in the Holy Book,” said
Migwi.
He warned that withholding sex could lead to broken
families, failure to conceive and infidelity.
“It is through sex that children are born, so maybe the day
the woman is denying her husband sex, could have been best time to conceive.
This call can also encourage infidelity and frequent fights in the family,”
cautioned Migwi.
He said that sex not only unites families, but also makes
God happy and withholding it would sadden Him, exposing us to punishment.
Maendeleo ya Wanaume Chairman, Nderitu Njoka said that, “It
is wrong to deny your husband sex just because he is not registered voter. That
is a violation of our rights. We call upon such men to forward their complaints
for our intervention.”
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has said
that though failure to register as a voter is a violation of the Constitution,
no one has the right to force individuals to vote or register as voters.
