Tension As CAN Holds Election

The two-day meeting of the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN scheduled for today and tomorrow to elect a successor for the outgoing national president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, will go ahead despite rumours that certain individuals were planning to arrest some of the leaders to forestall the elections. At the time of this report, there were rumours of plans to disrupt the exercise through the arrest of the outgoing Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the National General Secretary of CAN, Rev. Musa Asake, and the body’s Director of National Issues, Elder Sunday Oibe, on trumped-up charges by certain aggrieved parties in the contest leading to today’s exercise. Feelers reaching Vanguard last night from Abuja indicated that tension was mounting as plain-clothed security officers were said to be on the trail of the CAN leaders, even as delegates from the five different blocs had started arriving Abuja for the scheduled NEC meeting, which will determine the next direction of the umbrella body of Christiansm in the country.
