The remains of late DSP Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was yesterday afternoon
received by the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr
Goodluck Jonathan and the governor of the state, Henry Seriake Dickson and
other elders.
The former governor will be buried today in his country home even as distinguished persons from across the globe and his political friends from the different political divides are expected to grace the occasion.
The Federal Government delegation will be led by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo along with other prominent sons and daughters of the South South geo-political divides, friends from the military and others from the business world.
Ex-president Jonathan led the group of distinguished guests to the lying-in-state ceremony at the government House, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State where the Valedictory Executive Council Session was held.
At the valedictory session, dignitaries poured encomium on the late illustrious son of the Bayelsa and proclaimed him as an eminent tourch bearer who laid the groundwork for the development of the state stressing his footprints are felt everywhere in the state.
The Valedictory Executive council session, which is part of the many programmes lined up as our great Ijaw icon begins his final journey to eternity, celebrated the glory of the illustrious Ijaw chieftain who has been acclaimed as a political icon in view of his political clouts, towering performances while in office and his quest to liberate the Ijaw nation.
Nigerian Pilot Saturday recalls that DSP Alamieyeseigha was the first Executive governor of Bayelsa State while the former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was the deputy governor.
He died of cardiac arrest late year.
He reportedly slipped into a coma two days earlier and was placed on life support at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital.
There were reports during the week that the British Government was determined to resurrect an outstanding case of money laundering against the former governor and had requested for his extradition to London.
Alamieyeseigha, who was facing money laundering charges, jumped bail and returned to Nigeria and has since then refused to answer summons for trial to continue.
Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was born on November 16, 1952 in Amassoma, Ogboin North Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
He attended the Bishop Dimieri Grammar School, Yenagoa. He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a Cadet Officer in 1974, then joined the Nigerian Air Force, where he served in the department of Logistics and Supply.
He held various air force positions in Enugu, Makurdi, Kaduna and Ikeja. Alamieyeseigha retired from the air force in 1992 as a Squadron Leader.
After leaving the air force, he became the Sole Administrator of Pabod Supplies Port Harcourt. Later he became Head of Budget, Planning, Research and Development of the National Fertiliser Company (NAFCON).
Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was impeached as governor on allegations of corruption on 9 December 2005.
