Actually, put away all your jokes because the Canadian
singer, who only three years ago was the butt of more gags, mug shots and memes
than he has body art (having been consigned to the slag heap of former teen
idols), is now so hot again that he will be playing outdoor stadiums.
Yes, the Purpose World Tour will look to fill
"rooms" such as the former Olympics stadium in Sydney which has
hosted the likes of U2, Taylor Swift and a few grand finals. What's more, the
March tour will coincide with a Bruce Springsteen tour and potentially Paul
McCartney and Radiohead tours for a very crowded late summer/early spring of
"heavyweights".
Bieber, a favourite of the tweens and pre-tweens – who
styled themselves "Beliebers" – when he was still a teenager with
low-hanging pants and high riding bleached hair, seemingly had fallen out of
favour by 2013. His Australian tour that year was more remembered for tabloid
"outrages", such as his spray-painting graffiti on a wall of his Gold
Coast hotel – something he'd already perfected in cities such as Rio de
Janeiro, than performances.
The fickle fan base seemingly had grown up and moved on to 5
Seconds Of Summer or One Direction, or just high school, while Bieber was
getting arrested or posting shots of himself on Instagram which might justify
an arrest on the grounds of public irritation.
Since then, thanks to his recordings with ultra-hip electro
producers such Jack U, the 22-year-old has earned his first American number one
single – swiftly followed by his second and third – from the one album, Purpose.
Bieber will play NIB Stadium, Perth, March 6; Etihad
Stadium, Melbourne, March 10; Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, March 13; and ANZ
Stadium, Sydney, March 15.
