19 Years After His Demise, Fela's Legacy Still Resonate.
The acclaimed Afro-beat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti seems to have refused to die despite that it has been 19 years since he gave up the ghost. His legacy still resonates till this day.
The vocal anti-colonial activist was severally arrested and brutalised by the Nigerian government in a bid to silence him but he remained undaunted in his struggle for the masses until his passing on August 2, 1997.
Fela’s oldest daughter, Yeni Kuti extolled her father’s virtues as she wrote in celebration of his death: ‘Nineteen years ago our icon father, leader and father of the nation left the world stage. He lives in us forever and continues to guide and protect us. That is why Nigeria didn’t go to war against all predictions. Rest in peace Fela. We miss you.’
Of the several times Fela was tortured during his struggles, Yeni recounted: ‘The powers that be, beat him mercilessly. Fela they can’t touch you now o!!!! Useless people.’
The outspoken and brave Afrobeat king lives on!
