The orgnisers of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA,
are poised to draw the curtain on 2014
with a show-stopping awards ceremony scheduled to hold on Saturday, December
27, at the prestigious Grand Ballroom, Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
To be staged in partnership with the African Union
Commission, AUC, AFRIMA will be rewarding excellence in the continental music
and media industry at the main awards ceremony.
Preceding the ceremony will be the African Music Summit
themed “Reviving the Business of Music in Africa” slated for the morning of
Saturday, December 27, at the Oriental Hotel. The Summit is a platform for
African and global music industry stake holders to network and deliberate on
how the music industry can be nurtured and structured to be a major contributor
to national and continental economies.
In the course of the invite-only award ceremony night, more
than 30 of AFRIMA’s 23.9-carat gold-plated trophies will be received by music
acts or groups in their respective categories.
The trophy recipients will also include an AFRIMA Legend
Awardee and the African Entertainment/Music Journalist of the year. To spice up
the proceedings will be sizzling performances from some of Africa’s top
performing artistes and bands.
“There is so much
excitement in store for guests who attend the both the Africa Music Summit and
AFRIMA main award ceremony. The Summit provides ample opportunity for robust
and strategic deliberations on developing the African music industry to compete
with the better developed industries around the globe”, stresses Delani
Makhalima, AFRIMA Juror from Zimbabwe.
Mr. Makhalima also states: “When we are done with the vital intellectual aspect of the event
calendar, all attention turns to the glamourous, star-studded, cultural concept
award ceremony for a fitting finale to the last weekend in 2014. AFRIMA is
eager to welcome our African music stars from within and outside the continent,
officials of the African Union Commission, members of the International
Committee of AFRIMA and special guests”.
Although committed to delivering a world-class 2014 award
event, the International Committee of AFRIMA reveals that part of the
ceremony’s programme will be to pay tribute to lives affected by the scourge of
Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in some West African states and terrorist insurgency
in Northern Nigeria, Somalia and part of Kenya -both disturbing trends had
necessitated the rescheduling of the award ceremony.

Hold
Uzo Chikere
The 7th edition of Nollywood Outstanding
Personality Awards (NOPA), initially slated to hold on Sunday December 7,
2014 at Etal Hotel, Oregun in Ikeja Lagos Nigeria, has been rescheduled to
take place at a later date.
According to the CEO of NOPA, Mr. Stanley Uche Okoronkwo, the much publicized and anticipated event has been postponed due to circumstances beyond organizing committee’s control even as he expressed the belief once certain issues were resolved, new date would be made known to the public.
Said he: “We believe that once certain issues are
resolved, a new date will be made known to all. As soon as we finish
consultation with the various committees and other relevant stakeholders we
will announce a new date we believe will benefit everybody and make
the programme better and stronger for it too.”
Mr Okoronkwo apologized to all the awardees, partners, invited guests and all NOPA faithful for any inconvenience the rescheduling would cause them. "We are deeply sorry, but it is to deepen the award and ensure a better outing for all that influenced this sad but realistic decision," he said.
The Project Consultant, Mr. D. D. William in his reaction
stated: "We have consistently
held six editions in Lagos with high Profile awardees in attendance
including, Peace Anyiam Osigwe, Olu Jacobs, kate Henshaw, Amaka Igwe, Okey
Ogunjiofor, Pete Edochie, RMD, Abdulkareem Mohammed, Dr. Peter Igho,
Ambassador Segun Olushola, Dr. Walter Ofornagoro, Governor Godswill Akpabio,
Osita iheme and Chinedu ikedieze amongst others.
“Top Journalists like Steve Ayonrinde, Oji Onoko, Shaibu
Husseni, Charles Nwagbara, Fred Iwenjora, Rose Peters, Azuh Arinze, Afolabi
Odeyemi, Roman Adigbo Ejiro amongst others have also been decorated at the
past editions. So in terms of credibility, NOPA has no rival. It is the
marketing we have to tackle more aggressively." He also called on top
brands to identify with NOPA.
The idea of NOPA which is in its 7th edition was conceived in 2007 by Stanword Media and hosted annually in conjunction with the Association of Movie journalists of Nigeria. The award is instituted to honour distinguished Nollywood personalities, corporate organizations, governmental bodies and agencies as well as individuals who have made tremendous efforts at making the Nigerian motion picture industry, Nollywood, what it is today. The 2014 awardees who will still be honoured are: John Okafor (Ibu) Ngozi Nwosu, Taiwo Ajayi Lycett, Ejike Asiegbu, ibinabo Fibresima, Bond Emeruwa, Ramsey Nouah, Desmond Elliot among others. A new Angel
enters Nollywood
Uzo Chikere
Up-coming
actress, Samuda Angel Samuel, SAS, has resolved to make her mark in the movie
sector otherwise called Nollywood.
Her performance in over eight films such as Onuoma's
Tears, Bitter revenge, Omosida, Faded, Sekem Babes among many others yet to be
released, speaks volume of her talent.
“I am gifted and talented”, the Ibiono Ibom Local
council of Akwa ibom State- born artiste said in an interview recently,
adding, “I am the second child to my dad and second to the last for my mum.”
Angel Samuda is also a graduate of Modern Languages and International
Studies, University of Calabar.
Her growing up was fun, she revealed. “Growing up was fun
and challenging to me because I grew up with my dad, a very strict and no
nonsense man. It got to a point sometimes I got confused of not even
remembering/knowing what or when to do, to avoid doing it wrongly. Having a
flash back to my growing up, I always smile and thank my dad for the woman I
have grown into. He groomed me in the right ways just like my mum should have
done.”
She cut her teeth in Nollywood some couple of years ago.
“It feels good, since it’s something I have always dreamed off, so to me it’s
an achievement and dreams come true. I actually started acting proper about
five years ago but decided to go professional, if you will call it that, this
year. And the reception has been good. As you can see, I am beautiful and I
have a good voice that Directors like, so the jobs keep coming. I am billed
to act a lead (for the first time) in a movie that is going to be shot this
Xmas period, so no holiday for me.”
And how far is she willing to go in Nollywood? “I
want to get to the peak of my dream, become a star and entertaining my fans
and viewers like I have always dreamed off.”
She will however not go nude in a movie in her quest to
achieve stardom. “Although acting is all about carrying my roles and
interpreting them well, but NO I can’t go nude, I mean totally nude in a
film, I am crazy no doubt, but the worse I can do is tease with a few sexy
shots but not completely going nude, no matter the money,” she submitted.
Unlike most parents, Angel Samuda’s have reacted favorably
to her acting career. “It’s normal and not a surprise to them because they
are use to it. As a child, I have always told them I'll be an actress and a
fashion designer. I started dancing and acting when I was five in school,
church, theatre group in cultural centre even at NYSC camp. Then my dad use
to tell me, “one after the other”… that I should focus on my education first
before taking acting as a profession since it’s what I want. I love acting, I
mean, it gives me joy and I feel good about it. So they are happy for me that
am living my dreams.
The beauty of it all is that she is comfortable playing
any role in a movie, “so far it has nothing to do with nudity, I am so
comfortable, and I will do my best to interpret it well to my viewers and
fans out there.”
Tru-J
Arrives Beat Scene With How I Wish
Uzo Chikere
The music industry in Nigeria would seem to be saturated
as performing and recording acts keep emerging on the beat scene on daily
basis. Yet there is space for anyone who elects to strike out in that
direction. Singer/songwriter/rapper/music sound engineer, Tru J is one act
courageously venturing into the into the country’s music apace.
To announce his arrival, Tru J recently pushed out two
singles entitled Kalili Kalala and How I Wish featuringVirginn
Owoeye. The songs are currently buzzing on the social media and on the verge
of becoming online hits.
The Imo State-born artiste raised in the City of benin,
Edo State South-South of Nigeria and he currently resides in Lagos State
Nigeria. He discovered his rap power and skills during his junior high school
days after he performed live on stage on a school platform in front of over
2000 young secondary school audience, in a state inter-school talent
competition in Benin City.
His stage name, Tru J is simply a derivative from his real
name, Joseph and his street nick-name "Trickie Under".
Tru, who's first rap single titled 'We Dey Go' was aired in three Benin-based major radio stations in 2006, never really made much impact into the music scene as anticipated. But he believes that his relocation to Lagos would afford him the much needed break in the entertainment industry. |
